LabGenomics is now providing a PCR diagnostic service for Bordetella pertussis infections.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of whooping cough cases in South Korea has sharply increased since June this year, reaching 6,986 as of July 6. 

This is the highest number recorded in the past decade, including the COVID-19 pandemic period, and the majority of cases are found in children and adolescents. The global incidence of pertussis has also surged recently, highlighting the importance of prevention and rapid testing.

Traditional blood tests and cultures have a longer turnaround time (TAT), making timely treatment difficult. However, using PCR diagnostics offers higher accuracy and sensitivity, with results available in just one day. 

The number of such tests conducted between January and July this year increased by over 30% compared to the same period last year.
